Axel's take on De Pijp: #6 of 12 in Amsterdam, 7.9/10
Choose food, café life and a metro over canal-house scenery. Excellent food streets, strong character and metro access earn its place, but hotel quality and value trail its appeal as a neighbourhood.
Stay here if meals and neighbourhood wandering matter as much as monuments. Albert Cuypmarkt, Gerard Doustraat and the streets around Sarphatipark give you market food, cafés, small shops and places to linger over dinner. It is a working residential neighbourhood as well as a visitor favourite, with the museums within walking reach.
Do not mistake local for sleepy. Market activity starts the day, and terraces and bars carry it into the evening. Choose carefully around the busiest eating streets if you need quiet. You will not get the old town’s canal setting, but metro 52 makes this an unusually practical alternative for a first visit.
- Best for: food lovers, travelers without a car
- Skip it if: You want a quiet market-free street; Canal views are essential
- Getting around: Metro 52 at De Pijp links Centraal and Zuid; tram 12 serves the neighbourhood; walk to Museumplein; from Schiphol change from train to metro at Zuid.
- After dark: Visitors describe plenty to do outside the door without the old town’s party-tourism concentration, though restaurant-facing rooms can still be loud.
- Rates: Typical Axel rate $251 a night

How to choose
- Choose Hotel Okura Amsterdam if destination dining, attentive service and an indoor pool outweigh staying outside the tourist core.
- Choose Hotel Notting Hill if you want comfortable beds and helpful service near De Pijp without paying for extensive luxury facilities.
- Choose ClinkCoco if a cheaper hostel setup and shared kitchen suit you better than full hotel service.
What paying more buys
ClinkCoco is cheaper than most here and offers a shared kitchen, but cramped dorms and noise are real compromises. Mid-priced Hotel Notting Hill adds conventional hotel comfort; pricier Hotel Okura brings destination restaurants, a pool and spa. Those extras are less worthwhile if you mainly want to eat around De Pijp and sleep. Typical rates with Axel here run from $177 a night at ClinkCoco to $496 at Hotel Okura Amsterdam (last 30 days).
