#8 of 9 hotels in Altoona & Prairie Meadows by Axel's take. Altoona & Prairie Meadows is #3 of 5 places to stay in Des Moines. The best hotels in Altoona & Prairie Meadows, ranked · Where to stay in Des Moines

Axel's take: 7.1/10

Friendly staff and a handy location, but the rooms show their age. a basic 2-star roadside hotel near Adventureland and Prairie Meadows, scored for what it is.

This basic 2-star hotel in Altoona is a reasonable budget base for Adventureland, Prairie Meadows or an I-80 stopover—not somewhere we'd choose for a polished getaway. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, and many report clean rooms and comfortable beds. Free parking, breakfast, Wi-Fi and an indoor pool give it useful extras for the class.

The catch is uneven upkeep: worn carpets, tired furniture, small bathrooms and occasional musty smells recur alongside the positive reports. Breakfast is limited, and parking can get tight when the hotel fills up. Pool heating and availability drew complaints earlier in 2026, although a September guest reported a good heated-pool experience; confirm before promising the kids a swim. We'd consider it for a short, practical stay, but skip it if consistently fresh interiors are a priority.

Best for: budget-conscious road trippers; short Adventureland visits; Prairie Meadows visitors
Watch out for: worn interiors and uneven housekeeping; limited breakfast and tight parking; confirm pool operation and heating
Location: Convenient to I-80, Adventureland and Prairie Meadows; outside central Des Moines.
Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise, but furnishings and carpets show wear; some bathrooms are cramped.
Cleanliness: Many guests report clean rooms, with recurring exceptions involving carpets, upholstery and odors.
Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff are the most consistent strength across review sites.
Amenities: Indoor pool, free Wi-Fi, basic breakfast and in-room refrigerators and microwaves; pool reliability has varied.
Fees and surprises: Parking is free; Expedia lists pet fees and credit-card-only payment.
