#1 of 9 hotels in Downtown & Court Avenue by Axel's take. Downtown & Court Avenue is #1 of 5 places to stay in Des Moines. The best hotels in Downtown & Court Avenue, ranked · Where to stay in Des Moines

Axel's take: 9.1/10

Historic character and consistently strong comfort make this a standout downtown choice. a restored historic 4-star hotel in downtown Des Moines, scored for what it is.

Hotel Fort Des Moines is a restored historic 4-star that delivers more personality than a standard business hotel without sacrificing the basics. We'd pick it for a downtown weekend or work trip: Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise spotless rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff, while Booking.com also scores cleanliness particularly highly. The grand lobby, Proudfoot & Bird restaurant and In Confidence speakeasy give you reasons to spend an evening downstairs.

The compromises are mostly practical. Hotel parking is paid valet only, breakfast costs extra unless included in your booking, and there's no pool. Some guests find the room styling less impressive than the public spaces, but recent feedback remains overwhelmingly positive. It's a strong pick for character and comfort; skip it if free parking or resort-style amenities matter more.

  • Best for: couples on a downtown weekend; business travelers wanting character; historic-hotel enthusiasts

  • Watch out for: paid valet; no hotel self-parking; breakfast generally costs extra; no swimming pool

  • Location: Downtown base near Western Gateway Park, with restaurants and attractions within walking distance.

  • Rooms: Comfortable beds and well-kept rooms earn broad praise; styling does not impress everyone.

  • Cleanliness: A clear strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor reviews.

  • Service: Recent guests repeatedly praise helpful front-desk staff and friendly valets.

  • Amenities: Restaurant, café, speakeasy, fitness center and free Wi-Fi; no pool.

  • Fees and surprises: Valet parking and breakfast carry extra charges; Hilton notes possible oversized-vehicle surcharges.
