#4 of 5 hotels in Downtown & Main Street by Axel's take. Downtown & Main Street is #2 of 5 places to stay in Columbia, South Carolina. The best hotels in Downtown & Main Street, ranked · Where to stay in Columbia, South Carolina

Axel's take: 7.9/10

Main Street character and welcoming staff outweigh dated rooms, but maintenance needs attention. a historic mid-range hotel on downtown Columbia’s Main Street, scored for what it is.

This historic mid-range Sheraton is a good pick if you want downtown Columbia on foot rather than a freshly renovated hotel. Its Main Street location puts restaurants, the State House and museums within easy reach. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, comfortable beds and generally clean rooms. The rooftop bar and a martini bar inside the former bank vault give it more personality than a standard chain stay.

The trade-off is uneven upkeep: guests on both sites describe tired finishes, and some 2026 stays brought hot-water or air-conditioning problems. These aren’t the dominant experience, but they matter beyond cosmetic wear. Valet parking costs extra and draws mixed feedback; breakfast is also extra. We’d choose it for location and character, but skip it if modern rooms and consistently polished facilities are priorities.

  • Best for: downtown weekends without much driving; USC visitors; travelers who prefer historic character

  • Watch out for: dated finishes and uneven maintenance; some recent hot-water and cooling complaints; paid valet with mixed service reports

  • Location: Walkable Main Street setting near restaurants, the State House and Columbia Museum of Art.

  • Rooms: Comfortable beds and traditional decor; recurring reports of worn finishes.

  • Cleanliness: Generally praised, though some guests flag neglected windows and vents.

  • Service: Welcoming, helpful staff are a consistent strength; valet feedback is less reliable.

  • Amenities: Rooftop bar, bank-vault bar, Starbucks and fitness center; club access requires eligibility.

  • Fees and surprises: Valet and breakfast cost extra; Marriott confirms no airport shuttle or EV charging.
