#5 of 5 hotels in Downtown & Main Street by Axel's take. Downtown & Main Street is #2 of 5 places to stay in Columbia, South Carolina. The best hotels in Downtown & Main Street, ranked · Where to stay in Columbia, South Carolina

Axel's take: 7.9/10

Come for the downtown location and rooftop bar, not a spacious, quiet retreat. a social, select-service hotel in a historic downtown building, scored for what it is.

Moxy Columbia Downtown is a social, select-service hotel in a historic building, not a conventional full-service Marriott. It’s a good pick for a short downtown stay: the State House is opposite, USC is nearby, and restaurants are within walking distance. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness and friendly staff. Bar check-in, communal games and the rooftop bar give it more personality than a standard overnight stop.

The trade-off is upstairs. Rooms are genuinely compact, with limited luggage and clothing storage, and recent reviews across sites describe street noise and weak soundproofing; some also mention rooftop music. Those are meaningful drawbacks, even allowing for the deliberately stripped-back Moxy concept. Breakfast and valet parking cost extra. We’d choose it for a sociable weekend traveling light, but skip it for light sleepers, families needing space or longer stays.

  • Best for: short downtown weekends; travelers who enjoy a lively bar scene; USC visitors traveling light

  • Watch out for: very small rooms and limited storage; street noise and occasional rooftop music; paid valet parking and breakfast

  • Location: Across from the State House, with easy walking access to USC and downtown dining.

  • Rooms: Compact, industrial-style rooms with walk-in showers; storage and soundproofing are recurring weaknesses.

  • Cleanliness: A consistent strength in guest feedback, including recent Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews.

  • Service: Staff receive frequent praise, though occasional check-in and service lapses appear.

  • Amenities: Rooftop bar, lobby games, gym, taco outlet and a round-the-clock snack market.

  • Fees and surprises: Valet parking and breakfast are extra; pets incur a nightly nonrefundable fee.
