Axel's take: 7.8/10

A good downtown base with welcoming staff, historic character and some practical compromises. a historic 4-star boutique hotel in downtown Cincinnati, scored for what it is.

The Cincinnatian is a historic 4-star boutique hotel whose strongest assets are its central location and people, rather than flawless luxury. It's a good pick for exploring downtown on foot, with Fountain Square, theaters and restaurants nearby. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds; many also appreciate the generous bathrooms. The coffee shop and Maverick’s Restobar make breakfast and an evening drink convenient.

The trade-offs are street noise, some room wear and parking that adds expense without always adding convenience. Recent guests mention scuffed finishes and occasional long valet waits, while noise complaints make this a less convincing choice for light sleepers. Breakfast costs extra unless included in your booking. We'd choose it for a downtown weekend, but skip it if you want polished luxury or easy, inexpensive parking.

• Best for: downtown sightseeing weekends; theater and sports trips; travelers who like historic hotels

• Watch out for: street noise in some rooms; paid valet parking and occasional waits; some worn room finishes

• Location: Central downtown setting near Fountain Square, theaters, restaurants and streetcar stops.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and often roomy bathrooms; some guests report worn finishes and street noise.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com and recent Expedia reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise; valet retrieval can occasionally be slow.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, fitness center, Kidd Coffee and Maverick’s Restobar; no airport shuttle.

• Fees and surprises: Valet costs extra; no hotel self-parking, nearby garages are not validated, and breakfast inclusion depends on the booking.
