Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong luxury base for lake views and shopping, with occasional service lapses. a five-star city hotel above Water Tower Place, scored for what it is.

The Ritz-Carlton, Chicago is a five-star city hotel above Water Tower Place, and we'd choose it for comfortable rooms, lake views and easy Magnificent Mile exploring. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, restful beds and welcoming staff; the Club Lounge earns particular affection. An indoor pool, spa and well-equipped gym round out a convincing luxury stay. The 26 Lakeside Suites received a renovation completed in 2026.

The reservation is service consistency, not the basics. Alongside glowing reports, several guests describe slow dining service or requests that weren't handled with five-star polish. Parking is expensive, and Club access requires a separate upgraded booking—even for Bonvoy elites. It's a strong pick for a shopping weekend or family celebration; we'd look elsewhere if flawless, anticipatory service is your top priority.

• Best for: Magnificent Mile shopping weekends; families celebrating special occasions; travelers prioritizing lake views

• Watch out for: occasional dining and service delays; expensive parking; Club access costs extra

• Location: Above Water Tower Place, with Michigan Avenue shopping and the lakefront within walking distance.

• Rooms: Comfort and views draw strong praise; the 26 Lakeside Suites were renovated in 2026.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across guest feedback, with especially high marks on Expedia.

• Service: Often warm and thoughtful, but dining delays and missed requests recur in some reviews.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, spa, gym and Torali dining; the pool is better suited to laps than play.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and pets incur fees; Club access requires an upgraded booking. Water Tower Place redevelopment is expected to begin in 2027.
