Axel's take: 8.4/10

A strong downtown budget pick, provided you can sleep through city noise. a retro budget motel in downtown Chicago’s River North, scored for what it is.

Ohio House is a retro budget motel in River North, not a full-service downtown hotel—and it delivers well on those terms. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean, updated rooms, comfortable beds and genuinely helpful staff. Restaurants, sightseeing and transit are within walking distance, making this a strong pick for travelers who prioritize exploring Chicago over hotel facilities.

The main compromise is sleep: traffic, sirens and neighboring rooms feature in recurring noise complaints. Guests also report that the front desk controls room temperatures, rather than individual thermostats. Rooms are compact, there’s no elevator, and the limited on-site parking costs extra. Breakfast inclusion needs checking because the official website and Expedia describe it differently. We’d skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting spacious rooms and full-service amenities.

• Best for: budget-conscious city explorers; couples on short sightseeing trips; travelers who appreciate retro motels

• Watch out for: street and neighboring-room noise; front-desk-controlled room temperatures; no elevator; limited paid parking

• Location: Walkable River North base for restaurants, downtown sights and transit.

• Rooms: Updated and generally comfortable, but standard rooms are compact and sound insulation is a weakness.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, especially on Expedia.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise; reception operates around the clock.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, microwaves, mini-fridges and coffee makers; breakfast at the on-site deli.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is paid and first-come, first-served; Expedia lists a deposit. Confirm breakfast inclusion before booking.
