Axel's take: 8.7/10

A strong River North base if you prefer a lively lobby to a spacious room. a social, design-led 3-star in River North, scored for what it is.

Moxy Chicago Downtown is a social, design-led 3-star that puts its energy into the shared spaces rather than oversized bedrooms. We'd pick it for a short Chicago break: River North restaurants and transit are close, check-in happens at the bar, and games and Zombie Taco give the lobby a genuine social purpose. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, welcoming staff and convenient location.

The compromise is upstairs. Rooms are compact, storage is limited, and some shower layouts offer less privacy than friends sharing might want. Guests also flag a loud lobby and occasional street or bar noise, so light sleepers should request a quieter room. Breakfast costs extra, parking is off-site, and housekeeping is every other day. We'd skip it for a quiet retreat or a longer stay with substantial luggage.

• Best for: solo travelers who enjoy a social lobby; couples on short city breaks; car-free restaurant and nightlife trips

• Watch out for: compact rooms and limited storage; lively bar atmosphere and possible noise; shower privacy varies by room layout

• Location: Walkable River North base near restaurants, the Riverwalk and rail connections.

• Rooms: Clean, compact and pared back; check the layout before sharing with friends.

• Cleanliness: Consistently strong guest feedback; Marriott lists every-other-day housekeeping.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength across recent guest reviews.

• Amenities: Lobby games, Bar Moxy, Zombie Taco and a 24-hour gym; no room service.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast, off-site parking and pets cost extra; parking is at 401 North Wells Street.
