Axel's take: 9.0/10

Distinctive design and genuinely praised service make this a standout city base. a design-led 4-star boutique hotel in Streeterville, scored for what it is.

Hotel EMC2 is a design-led 4-star boutique hotel in Streeterville, and we'd put it high on the list for a Chicago city break. The art-and-science theme gives it personality, but the fundamentals are the stronger selling point: Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds. The location puts Magnificent Mile shopping and plenty of restaurants within easy walking distance. The Albert restaurant and robot deliveries add character beyond the bedroom.

The main catch is the room layout. Glass showers sit prominently within the sleeping space; a wraparound curtain helps, but we'd choose a more conventional hotel when sharing with colleagues or privacy-conscious relatives. Some rooms are compact, and parking costs extra. It's a particularly strong fit for couples and solo travelers who prefer distinctive surroundings to a traditional full-service hotel.

• Best for: couples on a city break; design-minded solo travelers; Magnificent Mile shopping trips

• Watch out for: unconventional glass-shower layout; some compact rooms; paid parking

• Location: Walkable Streeterville base near Michigan Avenue, restaurants and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

• Rooms: Distinctive decor and well-liked beds; glass showers have privacy curtains, but layouts won't suit everyone.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent Expedia and Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff earn repeated praise, including from returning business travelers.

• Amenities: The Albert restaurant and bar, a 24-hour gym, room service and robot deliveries.

• Fees and surprises: Self-parking and valet cost extra; dogs incur a nonrefundable fee, and breakfast inclusion depends on the booking.
