Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong downtown base for clean rooms and sightseeing, rather than hotel downtime. a practical 3-star downtown hotel near the Riverwalk, scored for what it is.

This 3-star Hilton Garden Inn is a strong pick for exploring Chicago without paying for luxury extras. The Riverwalk is around the corner, with Michigan Avenue, theaters and Millennium Park within easy walking distance. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the cleanliness, helpful front desk and convenient setting. It's a dependable base for sightseeing or a short Loop work trip, rather than a hotel that needs to be the destination itself.

The trade-offs are mostly practical: there's no pool, breakfast costs extra unless included in your booking, and valet parking adds a substantial expense. Some guests find the beds firm or the rooms less polished than expected, despite documented interior updates. We'd choose it for location and reliable basics; skip it if you want extensive leisure facilities, included breakfast or a more indulgent stay.

• Best for: first-time Chicago sightseers; short Loop business trips; travelers exploring without a car

• Watch out for: paid breakfast unless included; costly valet parking; no self-parking; no swimming pool

• Location: Around the corner from the Riverwalk, with downtown sights and transit within walking distance.

• Rooms: Interior updates are documented, though some recent guests still mention firm beds or dated details.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback, including strong Expedia cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Friendly, helpful front-desk staff attract repeated praise across review sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, fitness center and Lobby Kitchen & Bar; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast, valet parking and pets carry extra charges; Hilton lists no self-parking.
