Axel's take: 8.4/10

A characterful Northwestern base, with compact rooms and old-building compromises. a historic 4-star boutique hotel near Northwestern, scored for what it is.

Graduate Evanston is a historic 4-star boutique hotel whose strongest assets are personality and location. We'd pick it for Northwestern visits: campus, downtown restaurants and the lakefront are all walkable. Its collegiate interiors, bookish lounge and front porch give it more character than a standard chain hotel. Recent Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and welcoming staff.

The compromises are mostly physical. Tripadvisor and Booking.com guests report some tight rooms and bathrooms, while recent Expedia reviews reinforce complaints about tiny elevators. Check the room category carefully: two-bed rooms have doubles, not queens. Breakfast and parking cost extra. It's a strong choice for a campus weekend, but we'd skip it if generous space and modern-building convenience matter more than atmosphere.

• Best for: Northwestern campus visits; Couples who prefer historic character; Walkable Evanston weekends

• Watch out for: Some compact rooms and bathrooms; Tiny elevators and reported waits; Breakfast and parking cost extra

• Location: Walkable to Northwestern, downtown dining and Lake Michigan; better for Evanston than central Chicago sightseeing.

• Rooms: Distinctive collegiate décor and generally comfortable beds; layouts vary, and two-bed rooms use doubles.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent Expedia feedback, backed by Booking.com's strong cleanliness rating.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise, with occasional less enthusiastic reports.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar, fitness center, free Wi-Fi and pet-friendly rooms.

• Fees and surprises: Paid valet or nearby garage parking; breakfast and pets carry charges, and Expedia lists an incidental deposit.
