Axel's take: 8.4/10

A dependable downtown base with friendly staff, useful amenities and a few practical compromises. a practical 3-star hotel just off the Magnificent Mile, scored for what it is.

This 3-star Courtyard is a strong pick for exploring downtown without paying for luxury trimmings. Its location just off Michigan Avenue makes shopping, restaurants and the Riverwalk easy to reach on foot. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and clean rooms. An indoor pool, 24-hour gym, Copper Fox restaurant and lobby Starbucks give it more useful extras than a basic city hotel.

The compromises are mostly practical: parking is expensive, breakfast isn't complimentary, and Marriott specifies housekeeping every other day. Some recent guests describe worn room finishes, while elevator waits crop up across review sites during busy periods. We'd choose it for a sightseeing-heavy trip, but skip it if freshly updated interiors, daily cleaning or a hotel-centered getaway are priorities.

• Best for: first-time Chicago sightseers; shoppers traveling without a car; families wanting an indoor pool

• Watch out for: expensive parking and extra-cost breakfast; housekeeping every other day; some worn finishes and peak-time elevator waits

• Location: Just off Michigan Avenue, with restaurants, shopping and the Riverwalk within walking distance.

• Rooms: Generally comfortable; some recent guests report tired finishes rather than freshly updated interiors.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength in recent guest feedback, despite the alternate-day housekeeping schedule.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff receive repeated praise, with occasional less-positive reports.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, 24-hour gym, Copper Fox restaurant and lobby Starbucks.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and breakfast cost extra; Marriott lists housekeeping every other day.
