Axel's take: 8.5/10

ACME delivers character and a great location, with compact rooms and some street noise. a music-themed mid-range boutique hotel in River North, scored for what it is.

ACME is a music-themed mid-range boutique hotel, now part of Hilton’s Outset Collection, and a strong pick for exploring Chicago without paying for luxury extras. The River North location puts restaurants, shopping and the Grand Red Line station close at hand. Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and the playful decor. The Berkshire Room cocktail bar and West Town Bakery give it more personality than a standard chain hotel.

The trade-offs are practical: some rooms are compact, several guests describe worn finishes, and street-facing rooms can catch substantial nighttime noise. Cleanliness feedback is broadly positive, though occasional housekeeping misses recur. Request an interior-facing room if sleep matters more than views. Bunny Slope is a hot tub, not a conventional swimming pool, and private parties restrict access. We'd skip ACME for spacious luxury or guaranteed quiet.

• Best for: couples on city breaks; car-free sightseeing; travelers who prefer character to luxury

• Watch out for: nighttime noise in street-facing rooms; compact rooms and some worn finishes; hot tub unavailable during private parties

• Location: Walkable River North base near Grand Red Line, restaurants and Magnificent Mile shopping.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and distinctive decor; some rooms are small, worn or exposed to street noise.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall ratings, with occasional recent complaints about floors and bathroom cleaning.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across Expedia and Tripadvisor.

• Amenities: Cocktail bar, bakery, gym, free Wi-Fi and morning coffee; Bunny Slope offers a hot tub rather than a swimming pool.

• Fees and surprises: Paid third-party parking has no in/out privileges; pets incur a fee, and private bookings interrupt hot-tub access.
