Best Western hotels rated: 6.6/10 for how they treat paying guests

Best Western earns a shortlist, not a blind booking
Our take: We'd book Best Western selectively: mandatory fees appeared infrequently in rates Axel's suppliers quoted, but hotel quality varies by brand[Axel data]. It suits travelers who choose flexible rates and value points that never expire; the catch is hotel-specific cancellation terms and no BWR elite benefits on any third-party reservation[1][2][3].
Best for
- Flexible-rate travelers
- Occasional points collectors
- Careful hotel-by-hotel shoppers
Watch out for
- Hotel-specific cancellation deadlines
- Third-party bookings lose elite benefits
- Costly resort fees where charged

Mandatory fees appear infrequently in quoted rates, but are costly where charged, and published terms still allow charges outside quoted totals.
Refundable rates are reasonably available, often with short deadlines, but hotels set their own windows and some advance-purchase offers prohibit changes entirely.
Flexible bookings leave room to rebook, but no price-only adjustment is promised and the guarantee has a short claim window and extensive exclusions.
Free membership provides a modest published discount, but OTA stays lose points and elite-night credit, while every third-party reservation loses BWR elite benefits.
Points never expire, but award prices follow expected room rates, availability is controlled, and elite benefits offer few guaranteed stay improvements.
Core brands advertise free Wi-Fi, but hotel-specific deposits, early-departure charges and late-checkout penalties can cost substantial money.
Reviewed hotels are generally adequate, but core Best Western and SureStay Plus trail stronger Premier and WorldHotels Crafted results.
Few fees, no universal all-in promise
Best Western's published Taxes and Fees page calls the displayed total an estimate and warns that resort fees, parking and incidentals may sit outside it[4]. That wording is not proof that a current booking omits mandatory charges, but it falls short of an all-in-price promise[4].
In 25,293 rates Axel's suppliers quoted at 143 hotels from September 26 to October 25, 2026, excluding the Philippines and Indonesia, 5% carried a mandatory property fee[Axel data]. A fee appeared on most rates at 3% of those hotels, and the typical charge where present was $43 a night. Suppliers can omit charges, so these shares are a floor, not a ceiling.
US rules have required upfront prices including mandatory lodging fees since May 12, 2025[5]. Some room-selection pages include them: examples are the $9 daily fee at Best Western Plus Universal Inn and $45 at Peppermill, WorldHotels Elite[6][7]. Those disclosures do not confirm inclusion on the initial hotel-search screen[6][7][8]. A law firm is soliciting a fee-disclosure investigation, but its page identifies no filed case, judgment or settlement[9].
Parking is another reason to check the address rather than assume a brand-wide inclusion[8][10]. Two examples show the range: Best Western Plus Atlantic Beach Resort charges $45 nightly for limited garage parking, while Best Western Dickson advertises free parking[8][10].
Flexible means checking the exact deadline
Best Western sets no single chain-wide cancellation deadline; the individual hotel's booking terms govern[1]. Its FAQ describes a one-night charge for ordinary late cancellation, with greater exposure possible for full-prepayment or minimum-stay reservations[1]. Discounted offers can be much stricter: the Asia Advance Purchase offer advertises 10% to 33% savings but requires full payment, prohibits changes and provides no cancellation refund[11].
Of the same rates, 65% were refundable[Axel data]. Among those refundable rates, 41% allowed free cancellation less than 24 hours before check-in, 39% required 24 to 72 hours, and 20% required at least 72 hours. That is useful flexibility, but the word 'refundable' alone tells you too little[1].
For a later price drop, we'd choose a flexible rate and change or cancel-and-rebook before its deadline, rather than count on a guaranteed price-only adjustment[1]. Reservations made directly with a hotel must be changed or cancelled with that hotel, not on bestwestern.com[1].
The Low Rate Guarantee offers an eligible competing-rate match plus a $100 Best Western gift card after the completed stay[12]. Claims must be filed within 24 hours of booking on bestwestern.com, and bookings made within 48 hours of the earliest published check-in time are ineligible[12][13]. Login-gated member prices, packages and numerous promotional or negotiated rates are excluded, and the competing rate must remain bookable when reviewed[13]. Treat it as a short-window comparison benefit, not ongoing protection against later price drops[12][13].
Free membership, real third-party penalties
Best Western Rewards membership is free, and its terms promise a discount of 7% or more against the published Flexible Rate through eligible Best Western websites, subject to country availability[14][3]. Members must sign in and select the member rate, and the rate terms require proof of membership at check-in[14][15]. The saving is against Best Western's Flexible Rate, not necessarily the cheapest equivalent OTA offer[3].
Every third-party reservation is excluded from BWR elite benefits[3]. OTA bookings also earn neither stay points nor qualifying-night credit toward status[3]. We'd compare the cash saving with those losses rather than assume booking direct is automatically better value[3][16].
Direct-booking price claims deserve a comparison: in a June 2025 interview, a BWH revenue manager acknowledged hotels offering OTA rates without matching them on the brand website[17]. The company described property-by-property work to correct member-rate mismatches, not proof that equivalent direct rates always win[17].
Keep the points, temper status expectations
Best Western Rewards' clearest strength is that points do not expire, without a periodic activity requirement in the FAQ[2]. Free nights are advertised at 5,000 to 70,000 points, but requirements depend on expected room rates and travel dates rather than a fixed property-category chart[3][2]. We'd join for occasional stays without treating a balance as a predictable future room price[3][2].
Pay with Points returns 0.5 US cents per point at participating hotels, including all hotels in the United States and Canada[18]. The advertised lack of blackout dates is qualified by capacity controls and room availability, so a standard room sold for cash is not automatically available for points[2][16]. Points bookings cover standard rooms and room taxes, but exclude resort fees, parking and incidentals[3].
Do not chase BWR status for guaranteed breakfast or room upgrades: neither appears in its published 2026 benefits table[16]. Early check-in and late checkout for Platinum, Diamond and Diamond Select are subject to availability[16]. Program-change protection is also unclear: current terms promise email notice and 90 days for material rights reductions while separately reserving earning and redemption changes without notice[3].
Check holds and departure charges
Best Western and SureStay advertise free Wi-Fi, while qualifying that amenities vary by hotel[19][20]. Best Western's pet guidance allows a potential charge of up to $40 per room per day and a refundable damage deposit up to $150 per stay, with hotel-specific policies[21]. We would not treat that guidance as a universal ceiling across WorldHotels[21][22].
Incidental requirements can tie up meaningful money: for example, Best Western Premier The Central Hotel authorizes $50 per night, capped at five nights, beyond room charges and taxes[23]. Another example, The Addison Hotel in SureStay Collection, requires $100, rejects cash and prepaid cards, and warns that unused funds can take seven to ten business days to become available[24]. A credit card is the safer choice if a debit-card hold would restrict money needed during the trip[23][24].
Departure charges also need checking: for example, Island Palms charges one night's lodging including tax for early departure, and half a night for overstaying checkout, rising to a full night at 4 p.m.[25]. A separate example, Caribe Royale Orlando in WorldHotels Elite, adds 23% service plus $5 delivery and tax to in-suite dining[26]. These are individual hotel rules, not a chain-wide fee schedule[25][26].
Choose the hotel before the badge
BWH hotels are independently owned and operated, and we'd choose the particular address rather than rely on the badge alone[27][Axel data]. Across 292 hotels Axel has reviewed in October 2026, the average was 8.03 out of 10, with 63% scoring at least 8 and 6% below 7.
Best Western Plus averaged 8.13 across 106 reviewed hotels, ahead of core Best Western's 7.86 across 111[Axel data]. Best Western Premier averaged 8.38 across 13, while WorldHotels Crafted averaged 8.84 across seven, making both stronger shortlists within those reviewed groups. SureStay Plus needs more caution: its seven reviewed hotels averaged 7.2, with 29% below 7.
Independent studies support a middling chain-wide view: ACSI gives BWH 75 out of 100 in 2026, against 77 for lodging overall[28]. Plus beat core Best Western in ACSI's 2026 results, 77 to 74, but their order was reversed in 2025, so that advantage is not settled[29][28]. Which?'s UK results, based on its June and July 2025 survey, gave both brands two stars for bedrooms and value but four for customer service[30].
- Axel's take, 292 Best Western hotels reviewed: average 8.0/10; 63% score 8 or higher, 6% score below 7. Each hotel is scored for what it is, against its class and price. Across all hotels Axel has reviewed, the average is 8.1 and 8% score below 7.
- Rates Axel's suppliers quoted, September 26 to October 25, 2026: 25,293 rates at 143 hotels. 65% were refundable, and 41% of those could be cancelled free until less than 24 hours before check-in. 3% of hotels added a mandatory resort, destination or similar fee to most rates (typically $43 a night where charged).
| Brand | Hotels reviewed | Average Axel's take | Below 7 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best Western | 111 | 7.9 | 6% |
| Best Western Plus | 106 | 8.1 | 4% |
| Best Western Premier | 13 | 8.4 | 0% |
| BW Premier Collection | 11 | 8.2 | 9% |
| BW Signature Collection | 11 | 8.1 | 0% |
| WorldHotels Crafted | 7 | 8.8 | 0% |
| SureStay Plus | 7 | 7.2 | 29% |

Which Best Western brands to book
- Best Western (Mixed): Choose the address carefully: 111 reviewed hotels averaged 7.86, with 6% below 7[Axel data].
- Best Western Plus (Solid): Our default shortlist within the group, with an 8.13 average across 106 reviewed hotels and 4% below 7[Axel data].
- Best Western Premier (Our pick): A stronger bet in the reviewed group: 13 hotels averaged 8.38, with none below 7[Axel data].
- BW Premier Collection (Mixed): Upscale independent hotels, but inspect the individual property: the 11 reviewed hotels averaged 8.2, with 9% below 7[31][Axel data].
- BW Signature Collection (Solid): Worth a look for distinctive, mid-priced hotels; 11 reviewed properties averaged 8.09, with none below 7[31][Axel data].
- WorldHotels Crafted (Our pick): The standout reviewed group, averaging 8.84 across seven hotels, with none below 7[Axel data]. That small group should not stand for every WorldHotels collection[32][Axel data].
- SureStay (Solid): A reasonable economy shortlist: published coverage of J.D. Power's 2026 results places SureStay third among 13 ranked economy brands[33]. This is not a separate result for SureStay Plus[33].
- SureStay Plus (Skip if you can): We'd skip it as a default: seven reviewed hotels averaged 7.2, with 29% below 7[Axel data]. That small group is a warning, not a verdict on every address[Axel data].
How to book Best Western well
- Choose a flexible rate if your plans might change, and record the exact local cancellation deadline rather than relying on the word refundable[1][Axel data].
- Before you book, compare the signed-in member rate with the equivalent OTA offer, remembering that OTA stays lose points and elite-night credit and every third-party reservation loses BWR elite benefits[3].
- Before redeeming, compare the free-night quote with Pay with Points, which returns 0.5 US cents per point at participating hotels[18].
- Before arrival, ask the hotel about its incidental hold, accepted cards and release timing, particularly if you intend to use a debit card[23][24].
- Skip SureStay Plus as a blind booking and check the particular hotel's recent reviews, given the weaker results in its small reviewed group[Axel data].

What would raise the score
- Replace the taxes-and-fees disclaimer with a binding worldwide first-price total that includes every mandatory property charge.
- Set a chain-wide cancellation floor for flexible rates and offer an explicit lower-price adjustment before that deadline.
- Make standard-room points availability match cash availability and publish one unambiguous notice rule for program reductions.
- Publish consistent limits and advance disclosures for incidental holds and early-departure penalties.
Questions about Best Western
Does Best Western charge resort fees?
Some hotels do: 5% of the quoted rates carried a mandatory property fee, typically $43 nightly where charged, but omissions mean that share is a floor[Axel data]. Best Western Rewards free nights do not cover resort fees or parking[3].
Can I cancel a Best Western reservation for free?
It depends on the hotel and selected rate, because Best Western has no universal cancellation deadline[1]. Ordinary late cancellation generally costs one night, while some advance-purchase offers require full payment and allow no refund[1][11].
Can I get a lower price after booking?
An eligible flexible reservation can be changed or cancelled within its deadline, but Best Western does not describe a guaranteed price-only adjustment[1]. Its separate Low Rate Guarantee requires a claim within 24 hours of booking and has substantial eligibility restrictions[12][13].
Do I earn Best Western points through Booking.com or Expedia?
No, OTA bookings earn neither BWR stay points nor qualifying-night credit[3]. Every third-party reservation is also excluded from BWR elite benefits[3].
Do Best Western Rewards points expire?
Points do not expire, and the FAQ states no periodic activity requirement[2]. Promotional free-night awards are different: they expire on their stated date and can be forfeited for late cancellation or a no-show[3].
Which Best Western brand should I choose?
We'd start with Best Western Plus for a broad shortlist, then compare Premier and WorldHotels Crafted where available; all three performed better than core Best Western in the reviewed hotels[Axel data]. SureStay Plus warrants closer property-level checking because its small reviewed group had materially weaker results[Axel data].
