Axel's take: 6.8/10

Useful downtown location and generous rooms, but four-star consistency is missing. An older downtown 4-star with spacious rooms and uneven upkeep, scored for what it is.

Diwan is an older downtown 4-star that makes more sense as a practical stopover than a polished spa stay. Its strongest arguments are the location near Casa-Port and the Central Market, generously sized rooms and frequently praised staff. Booking.com guests rate it considerably better than Tripadvisor travelers, while recent Expedia reviews praise clean rooms and welcoming service. We'd consider it for a short city visit if space and convenience matter more than finish.

The reservation is consistency. Recent reviews describe tired furnishings, unreliable air-conditioning and bathroom maintenance problems; other guests report comfortable, spotless rooms. Street and corridor noise, plus reports of indoor smoking, also weaken its appeal for a restful stay. We'd skip it if you're expecting dependable four-star polish or are particularly sensitive to noise and smoke.

• Best for: Short downtown stopovers; Travelers using Casa-Port; Value-minded guests wanting larger rooms

• Watch out for: Uneven maintenance and air-conditioning; Street and corridor noise; Reports of indoor smoking

• Location: Convenient downtown base near Casa-Port, the Central Market and tram connections.

• Rooms: Often spacious and comfortable, but dated fittings, cooling and plumbing draw recurring complaints.

• Cleanliness: Many guests praise clean rooms, though other recent accounts flag housekeeping lapses and bathroom mold.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff receive frequent praise; complaint handling is less dependable.

• Amenities: Restaurant, gym and spa are listed; Expedia says the spa opens only on selected days.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra depending on the booking; confirm spa hours and parking arrangements.
