Axel's take: 7.2/10

Good beachfront value, provided you accept dated rooms and limited dining variety. A budget-friendly beachfront all-inclusive with a four-star listing, scored for what it is.

Flamingo is a budget-friendly beachfront all-inclusive, not a polished four-star resort. We'd consider it for a straightforward Cancún beach break: the sand is the main attraction, the grounds are compact, and guests repeatedly praise individual restaurant and bar staff. Tripadvisor, Expedia and Trip.com feedback points to good value when expectations stay realistic, with cleanliness generally earning stronger marks than room condition.

The compromises are dated rooms, uneven maintenance and service that depends on whom you encounter. Food has its fans, but repetitive buffets and limited variety recur across sites; evening entertainment is modest too. It's a sensible pick for beach-focused couples and families who want meals included. We'd skip it for a food-led holiday, consistently attentive service or an upscale resort experience.

• Best for: Budget-conscious beach lovers; Couples wanting a compact resort; Families prioritizing all-inclusive convenience

• Watch out for: Dated rooms and uneven maintenance; Repetitive dining and modest entertainment; Inconsistent service

• Location: Directly on the beach in the Hotel Zone at kilometer 11.5; beachfront access is its clearest strength.

• Rooms: Balconies and ocean-view options appeal, but guests repeatedly describe aging rooms and maintenance shortcomings.

• Cleanliness: Generally a relative strength: Expedia rates cleanliness above the hotel's overall guest score, though lapses appear elsewhere.

• Service: Many staff receive warm praise, but inconsistent restaurant and reception service recurs across sites.

• Amenities: Two outdoor pools, a children's pool, kids' club and gym; recent guests find evening entertainment limited.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and Wi-Fi are included; massages, transfers, laundry and excursions cost extra.
