Axel's take: 8.2/10

A strong family resort for pools and dining, less convincing for beach lovers. a large, modern luxury all-inclusive for families, scored for what it is.

AVA is a large, modern luxury all-inclusive that works best when the resort itself is the holiday. We'd pick it for families wanting ocean-view rooms, plentiful activities and dining variety rather than an intimate escape. Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, helpful staff and food; Tripadvisor feedback also highlights the pools and children's entertainment. The hotel's guaranteed ocean views and saltwater AVA Bay lagoon are meaningful strengths.

The main compromise is the beach: guests across Tripadvisor and Reddit describe murky water and seaweed, so don't book expecting classic turquoise-water swimming. The sprawling layout means considerable walking, while busy-period reviews flag restaurant-reservation difficulties and uneven service. Some entertainment costs extra despite the all-inclusive label. It's a strong pool-first family choice; we'd skip it for a quiet, beach-centered luxury break.

• Best for: families with children and teens; pool-first all-inclusive holidays; travelers wanting dining variety

• Watch out for: murky seawater and seasonal seaweed; long walks and busy-period dining bottlenecks; extra charges for some entertainment

• Location: Convenient for the airport, but the beach is a recurring weakness in guest feedback.

• Rooms: Modern ocean-view rooms; standard king and queen categories include terraces with two-person spa tubs.

• Cleanliness: A clear overall strength on Expedia and Booking.com, despite occasional housekeeping misses.

• Service: Many guests praise individual staff; responsiveness and dining access can slip when busy.

• Amenities: AVA Bay lagoon, multiple pools, children's water play, kids' and teens' clubs, gym and varied dining.

• Fees and surprises: A nightly incidental card hold applies; guests report extra charges for bowling, laser tag and escape-room activities.
