Axel's take: 7.0/10

Friendly staff and appealing pools, but unfinished upkeep limits the resort experience. a small, adults-only 3-star near the airport with clothing-optional shared areas, scored for what it is.

Akuazul is a small, adults-only 3-star near Cancún’s airport, better suited to a low-key pool break than a classic beach vacation. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise welcoming staff, clean rooms and the distinctive decor; swim-up rooms are a particular draw. It’s a reasonable pick for independent travelers with transport arranged, rather than anyone expecting a polished, full-service resort.

The hotel confirms ongoing improvement work, and 2026 guests describe construction, closed areas and uneven maintenance. Recent reviews still flag an unsuitable beach, occasional mangrove odors and road noise. Breakfast inclusions can be meager, with fuller meals extra. Crucially, the official booking page now advertises clothing-optional pools, beach and common areas. We’d skip it for dependable beach swimming, walkable dining or a reliably quiet, fully functioning resort stay.

• Best for: adults comfortable with clothing-optional areas; couples seeking swim-up rooms; independent travelers with a car

• Watch out for: ongoing improvements and closed areas; unsuitable swimming beach and occasional odors; isolated location and road noise

• Location: Convenient for the airport, but removed from restaurants, nightlife and easy public transport.

• Rooms: Cleanliness and comfort generally earn praise; swim-up access appeals, but wear and noise recur.

• Cleanliness: Room cleaning is a relative strength; pool cleanliness and outdoor upkeep receive mixed reports.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent positive across review sites.

• Amenities: Pools, restaurant, bar and Wi-Fi; confirm which facilities are operating during improvement work.

• Fees and surprises: Not all-inclusive; check breakfast inclusions and transport costs. Shared areas are advertised as clothing-optional.
