Axel's take: 7.6/10

Downtown character and welcoming staff, but noise and uneven upkeep hold it back. A historic mid-range boutique hotel in downtown Birmingham, scored for what it is.

The Kelly is a historic mid-range boutique hotel whose strongest assets are downtown convenience and personable staff. We'd consider it for a short city break built around restaurants and bars. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean, comfortable rooms and helpful service, while Tripadvisor is noticeably more mixed. The distinctive decor and on-site bar give it more personality than a standard chain stop.

The trade-offs are real: street noise recurs across sites, particularly on lower floors, and some recent guests report housekeeping lapses, worn furnishings and inadequate bathroom-window privacy. Request a higher room away from the street. Parking is paid valet, with no hotel self-parking. The gym was reported closed in March and May 2026; Hilton still lists it, so confirm availability. We'd skip it if quiet sleep or consistently polished rooms are priorities.

  • Best for: Couples exploring downtown restaurants; Short city breaks; Travelers who prefer historic character

  • Watch out for: Street noise, especially on lower floors; Uneven housekeeping and room upkeep; Confirm gym reopening before booking

  • Location: Central downtown setting with restaurants, bars and several attractions within walking distance.

  • Rooms: Distinctive decor and generally comfortable beds; noise, wear and bathroom-window privacy draw recurring complaints.

  • Cleanliness: Many recent Expedia guests praise cleanliness, but Tripadvisor includes repeated recent housekeeping failures.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength, despite occasional complaints about front-desk handling.

  • Amenities: Restaurant, lobby bar and free Wi-Fi; advertised gym had guest-reported closures in March and May 2026.

  • Fees and surprises: Paid valet only on-site; breakfast generally costs extra, so verify any package inclusions.
