Axel's take: 7.4/10

Useful kitchen suites and friendly staff, with some wear behind the convenience. a practical 3-star extended-stay hotel near I-65, scored for what it is.

The former Residence Inn now operates as Sonesta ES Suites Birmingham Homewood, a practical 3-star extended-stay hotel near I-65. We'd consider it for longer visits when a kitchen and room to spread out matter more than polished interiors. Recent Expedia and Google guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and clean rooms, while included breakfast and on-site laundry make everyday stays easier.

The trade-off is uneven upkeep: Booking.com and Expedia feedback flags maintenance shortcomings and missing kitchen supplies, with some reports of stained carpets. Breakfast gets mixed reactions, too. Parking carries a nightly charge despite the catalog's free-parking claim, and Expedia lists a breakage deposit. The outdoor pool is seasonal, so confirm dates before relying on it. We'd skip it if you want consistently fresh finishes or a walkable downtown base.

• Best for: longer stays with a car; families wanting kitchen suites; travelers prioritizing space over polish

• Watch out for: uneven maintenance and kitchen supplies; paid parking and a breakage deposit; seasonal outdoor pool

• Location: Convenient to I-65 and driving around Birmingham; better suited to motorists than downtown sightseeing on foot.

• Rooms: Spacious kitchen suites and comfortable beds earn praise; upkeep and kitchen inventory vary.

• Cleanliness: Recent feedback is largely positive, though stained carpets and occasional cleaning lapses temper confidence.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are the most consistent strength across recent guest feedback.

• Amenities: Included breakfast, Wi-Fi, laundry facilities and a gym; outdoor pool operates seasonally.

• Fees and surprises: Now Sonesta, not Marriott; parking and pets cost extra, and Expedia lists a breakage deposit.
