Axel's take: 7.6/10

Downtown character and welcoming staff, but maintenance keeps it short of four-star polish. a historic 4-star boutique hotel in downtown Birmingham, scored for what it is.

The Redmont is a historic 4-star boutique hotel downtown, and we'd choose it for character and location rather than flawless polish. Its 1925 building, rooftop cocktails and proximity to restaurants and cultural sights give it more personality than a standard business hotel. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, comfortable beds and clean rooms, although satisfaction is less consistent than the grand setting suggests.

The trade-offs are recurring reports of elevator outages, tired carpets and uneven room upkeep. Recent guests also mention noise and missing mini-fridges, so don't assume every modern convenience is included. Valet parking costs extra, and the hotel offers no self-parking. It's a good fit for a short downtown break; we'd skip it if dependable quiet and uniformly fresh rooms matter most.

• Best for: travelers who like historic hotels; short downtown sightseeing breaks; couples who enjoy rooftop drinks

• Watch out for: recurring elevator-outage reports; uneven room upkeep and noise; paid valet; no hotel self-parking

• Location: Central downtown base near restaurants, the Birmingham Museum of Art and civil-rights sights.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds earn praise, but wear and noise recur; confirm refrigerator availability.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive ratings, with some recent complaints about carpets and bathroom upkeep.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength across Expedia and Booking.com.

• Amenities: Rooftop bar, restaurant, lobby cafe, fitness center and free Wi-Fi.

• Fees and surprises: Valet and breakfast can cost extra; check elevator status before arrival if accessibility is critical.
