Axel's take: 4.8/10

Downtown convenience cannot make up for recurring cleanliness and maintenance problems. a basic 2-star downtown motel near UAB, scored for what it is.

Kings Inn is a basic 2-star downtown motel, not a UAB campus hotel. Its practical advantages are free parking, free Wi-Fi and access to Birmingham’s civil-rights landmarks and downtown venues. Some recent guests describe clean, comfortable rooms and friendly staff, but the overall picture is weak: Booking.com rates it 4.9/10 and Expedia 6.2/10. We'd look elsewhere unless this particular location is essential.

The concern is more than dated decor. Across recent guest reports, stained bedding, unpleasant odors, worn furniture and bathroom leaks recur; several travelers also describe feeling uncomfortable around the property after dark. Staff earn more consistent praise than housekeeping or upkeep. Even for a simple motel, clean rooms and working basics should be dependable. We'd skip it for families, longer stays or anyone wanting a reassuring base for hospital visits.
