Axel's take: 8.0/10

A solid Homewood base with friendly staff, but some room-condition inconsistencies. a practical 3-star chain hotel off I-65 in Homewood, scored for what it is.

This is a practical 3-star chain hotel for travelers who want easy interstate access rather than a downtown address. We'd pick it for a Birmingham stopover or a Samford visit: nearby restaurants, free parking and an indoor pool make the basics convenient. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the friendly staff and spacious, comfortable rooms, with many recent reviews describing a clean, well-kept property.

The catch is consistency. Alongside that praise, reviews on Expedia and Tripadvisor describe stained carpets, missed cleaning details and occasional maintenance faults. Those aren't the dominant experience, but they're worth checking when you arrive. Breakfast generally costs extra unless your booking includes it, and dogs incur a nonrefundable fee. We'd skip it if you want downtown sightseeing on foot or especially dependable housekeeping.

• Best for: road-trip stopovers; Samford visitors with a car; business travelers

• Watch out for: uneven housekeeping and room maintenance; breakfast usually costs extra; driving needed for downtown sightseeing

• Location: Off I-65 near shops and restaurants; Hilton puts downtown and UAB about 15 minutes away.

• Rooms: Often praised as spacious and comfortable; some guests report carpet stains and maintenance issues.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive feedback, including recent stays, but cleaning lapses recur across review sites.

• Service: Friendly, accommodating staff are one of the most consistent strengths.

• Amenities: Indoor pool, fitness center, restaurant and free Wi-Fi; don't count on a hot tub.

• Fees and surprises: Free self-parking; breakfast usually extra; Hilton lists dogs only with a nonrefundable pet fee.
