Axel's take: 8.2/10

Historic character and warm service make this a strong downtown base, with transition caveats. a historic downtown mid-range hotel, now a DoubleTree by Hilton, scored for what it is.

The former Hampton is now Tutwiler Hotel Birmingham, a DoubleTree by Hilton, following its August 2026 rebrand. This historic mid-range hotel offers more character than a standard chain stay, with preserved marble and decorative ceilings alongside refreshed guest rooms. We'd pick it for downtown sightseeing or arena events: Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise cleanliness, comfortable rooms and helpful staff, while Tripadvisor reviewers particularly appreciate the valet team.

The catch is the recent conversion. Renovation disrupted stays earlier in 2026, and August reporting said finishing work remained; Hilton now labels the property recently renovated and advertises a restaurant and bar. Confirm any remaining work and dining hours before booking. Paid valet is the only hotel parking, and breakfast information conflicts across current listings—don't assume the old Hampton inclusion. Skip it if free parking and predictable breakfast arrangements are priorities.

• Best for: downtown sightseeing; arena and convention visitors; travelers who prefer historic buildings

• Watch out for: paid valet; no hotel self-parking; conflicting breakfast information; confirm renovation completion and dining hours

• Location: Central downtown base near the art museum, civil rights sights and BJCC.

• Rooms: Recently refreshed; guests commonly praise comfort and spaciousness, especially in suites.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Tripadvisor feedback.

• Service: Friendly staff and helpful valets receive repeated praise across review sites.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi and fitness center; Hilton advertises a restaurant and bar.

• Fees and surprises: Valet costs extra; breakfast availability and inclusion need confirmation following the rebrand.
