#8 of 9 hotels in Hackescher Markt & Scheunenviertel by Axel's take. Hackescher Markt & Scheunenviertel is #1 of 12 places to stay in Berlin. The best hotels in Hackescher Markt & Scheunenviertel, ranked · Where to stay in Berlin

Axel's take: 7.8/10

A strong central base for sociable travelers, less convincing for quiet nights. A large, design-led budget hostel with dorms, pods and private rooms in central Berlin, scored for what it is.

Generator Berlin Mitte is a large, design-led hostel, not a conventional hotel. We'd pick it for the excellent location and sociable setup: Museum Island is walkable, public transport is close, and the café and bar give you somewhere to linger. Tripadvisor, Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and convenient base. Dorms, pods and private rooms offer different levels of privacy, but the appeal is affordable city exploring rather than hotel-style comfort.

The compromises are cramped rooms, recurring nighttime noise and uneven shared-bathroom cleanliness, despite plenty of positive cleaning reports. Recent guests also flag paid luggage storage, while Generator lists towels as extras for some bunk-room categories. It's a good fit for friends and independent travelers; we'd skip it for light sleepers or anyone expecting consistently polished facilities.

  • Best for: Solo travelers wanting a sociable base; Friends exploring Berlin on a budget; Sightseers prioritizing location

  • Watch out for: Nighttime noise and compact rooms; Inconsistent shared-bathroom cleanliness; Luggage storage and some towels cost extra

  • Location: Central Mitte location near S-Bahn and U-Bahn links, with Museum Island within walking distance.

  • Rooms: Dorms, pods and private rooms; several guests find the bunk rooms cramped and sound insulation limited.

  • Cleanliness: Many guests praise clean rooms, but shared bathrooms attract recurring complaints across sources.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful reception and café staff are consistent strengths in recent reviews.

  • Amenities: Café, bar, social spaces, free Wi-Fi and laundry; do not assume a communal self-catering kitchen.

  • Fees and surprises: Paid luggage storage; towels are extra in some bunk-room categories, so check your room's inclusions.
