Axel's take: 6.6/10

Useful for Pratunam shopping, but tired rooms and tour-group crowds limit its appeal. a large, aging mid-range hotel in Makkasan, not a five-star luxury stay, scored for what it is.

Bangkok Palace is a large, old-school mid-range hotel in Makkasan, rather than the five-star experience some listings suggest. We'd consider it for a practical shopping trip if room space and a pool matter more than contemporary decor. The official site lists an outdoor pool and gym, and recent Tripadvisor guests appreciate both. Pratunam's markets and malls are reachable on foot, though guests describe a roughly 20-minute walk to the main shopping cluster.

The trade-offs are substantial: Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews repeatedly mention dated rooms, maintenance shortcomings and crowded breakfasts dominated by tour groups. Cleanliness and service divide opinion—some recent guests praise clean rooms and friendly staff, while others report dust and unhelpful responses. It's a workable base with modest expectations; we'd skip it for a quiet escape, polished service or dependable upscale comfort.

• Best for: Pratunam shopping trips; Travelers prioritizing room space and a pool

• Watch out for: Dated rooms and uneven maintenance; Tour-group crowds at breakfast; Inconsistent housekeeping and service

• Location: Makkasan base within walking reach of Pratunam; allow around 20 minutes for the main shopping cluster.

• Rooms: Spacious options, but dated decor and recurring bathroom or equipment maintenance complaints.

• Cleanliness: Mixed: recent praise for clean rooms sits alongside reports of dust and housekeeping lapses.

• Service: Some friendly-staff praise, but recurring complaints about responsiveness and checkout queues.

• Amenities: Officially lists an outdoor pool, gym, sauna, parking and room service; guests appreciate the pool and gym.

• Fees and surprises: Guests report a check-in deposit; confirm breakfast inclusion and note the hotel's durian restriction.
