#4 of 9 hotels in Karangahape Road & Upper Queen Street by Axel's take. Karangahape Road & Upper Queen Street is #4 of 10 places to stay in Auckland. The best hotels in Karangahape Road & Upper Queen Street, ranked · Where to stay in Auckland

Axel's take: 7.9/10

A practical budget base with helpful staff, but bring earplugs. A no-frills city hostel with dorms, private rooms and shared bathrooms, scored for what it is.

YMCA Hostel is a no-frills hostel near Karangahape Road, with dorm beds and private rooms sharing bathrooms. It's a good pick for budget travelers who want useful facilities rather than hotel polish. Recent Expedia and Hostelworld guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff and clean rooms. Mini-fridges, communal kitchens, free Wi-Fi and advertised complimentary gym access make it practical for longer stays, too.

The main compromise is sleep: traffic, the fire station opposite and other guests feature in noise complaints across several sites. Rooms can also get warm, and kitchen cleanliness and equipment receive less consistent feedback than bedrooms and bathrooms. The central location involves some uphill walking. We'd choose it for an inexpensive city stay, but skip it if quiet nights, modern interiors or a private bathroom are priorities.

  • Best for: Solo travelers on a budget; Longer stays with self-catering; Travelers wanting a basic private room

  • Watch out for: Traffic and fire-station sirens; Warm rooms and shared bathrooms; Uneven communal-kitchen standards

  • Location: Handy for K Road, Queen Street and buses; expect hills and a busy street.

  • Rooms: Basic dorms and private rooms with mini-fridges and fans; bathrooms are shared.

  • Cleanliness: Recent feedback is broadly positive for rooms and bathrooms; kitchens are less consistent.

  • Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength; reception operates around the clock.

  • Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, shared kitchens, laundry, lounges and advertised complimentary gym access.

  • Fees and surprises: Breakfast and parking cost extra; official parking hours are 5pm–7am, and Expedia lists a deposit.
