Axel's take: 7.7/10

Good-value self-catering rooms, with helpful staff and some rough edges. a practical 4-star apartment-style hotel on upper Queen Street, scored for what it is.

VR Queen Street is a practical 4-star apartment-style hotel: a good-value city base rather than a polished upscale stay. Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise clean rooms and helpful staff, while kitchenettes or full kitchens make it useful for longer visits. Its upper Queen Street address works well for theatres, universities and central dining; the hotel's restaurant, bar and laundry services add convenience.

The compromises are uneven maintenance and an uphill return from the waterfront. Several guests describe faulty equipment or incomplete kitchen supplies, although positive stays comfortably outweigh those reports. Street-facing rooms can catch weekend noise, so light sleepers should request a room away from Queen Street. Parking is limited and paid; breakfast costs extra, and Expedia lists a deposit and card surcharge. We'd choose it for practical comfort and self-catering, not a special-occasion stay.

• Best for: value-minded city visitors; longer stays with self-catering; families booking larger suites

• Watch out for: uneven maintenance and kitchen supplies; street noise and uphill walks; limited paid parking and payment extras

• Location: Upper Queen Street suits central outings, but the return from the waterfront is uphill.

• Rooms: Kitchenettes or full kitchens are useful; guests report occasional equipment and maintenance problems.

• Cleanliness: Generally a strength across recent reviews, despite occasional isolated complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception earns repeated praise; follow-up and problem handling are less consistent.

• Amenities: Restaurant, bar, free Wi-Fi, laundry services and 24-hour reception.

• Fees and surprises: Reserve paid parking ahead; breakfast is extra, with a deposit and card surcharge listed by Expedia.
