#1 of 5 hotels in Ponsonby & Grey Lynn by Axel's take. Ponsonby & Grey Lynn is #7 of 10 places to stay in Auckland. The best hotels in Ponsonby & Grey Lynn, ranked · Where to stay in Auckland

Axel's take: 9.1/10

A strong budget pick for clean rooms, sociable spaces and a park-side setting. A budget hostel in two restored villas beside Western Park, scored for what it is.

Verandahs is a budget hostel in two restored timber villas beside Western Park, and we'd put it high on Auckland's backpacker shortlist. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness, helpful staff and the well-equipped communal kitchen; recent Hostelworld reviews reinforce the friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Small dorms with individual single beds, private-room options and generous lounges make this especially appealing if you want company without a big party-hostel feel. Ponsonby and K Road are close by.

The compromises are practical: most room types share bathrooms, reception isn't staffed around the clock, and street parking carries daytime charges. Guests have also flagged limited storage and missing dorm lockers, so check arrangements for valuables. We'd skip it if you need full-service hotel facilities or a location right in the CBD; for independent travelers happy to self-cater, it's excellent for its class.

Best for: Solo travelers wanting a relaxed social hostel; Budget couples choosing a private room; Independent travelers who like to self-cater
Watch out for: Shared bathrooms in most room types; Limited reception hours; Check dorm lockers and daytime parking charges
Location: Beside Western Park, close to Ponsonby and K Road, rather than in the CBD core.
Rooms: Simple private rooms and small dorms with individual single beds; selected doubles and queens have ensuites.
Cleanliness: Consistently strong guest feedback, including high cleanliness scores on Booking.com and Expedia.
Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a recurring strength; arrange arrivals outside office hours in advance.
Amenities: Well-equipped shared kitchen, lounges, garden, verandahs, free Wi-Fi and laundry facilities.
Fees and surprises: Do not assume free all-day parking: the hostel lists street parking with daytime charges.
