#4 of 5 hotels in Ponsonby & Grey Lynn by Axel's take. Ponsonby & Grey Lynn is #7 of 10 places to stay in Auckland. The best hotels in Ponsonby & Grey Lynn, ranked · Where to stay in Auckland

Axel's take: 7.6/10

Good-value Auckland accommodation, with friendly staff but room choice matters. a practical 4-star hotel-and-motel complex in Grey Lynn, scored for what it is.

The Surrey is a practical 4-star hotel-and-motel complex in Grey Lynn, not a polished city-centre hotel. We'd pick it for an uncomplicated Auckland stay: free parking, an indoor pool and a proper pub restaurant make it useful for families and event trips. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the welcoming staff, clean rooms and convenient location for Eden Park and Western Springs.

The main compromise is consistency. Accommodation ranges from main-building rooms to motel studios across Great North Road, so check exactly what you're booking. Some recent guests describe dated interiors, uneven room supplies and noise from other guests or the pool area, although others report peaceful stays. It's good value if practicality matters more than polish; we'd skip it for a reliably quiet retreat or a downtown sightseeing base.

Best for: families seeking space and a pool; Eden Park and Western Springs event trips; travelers with a car
Watch out for: motel studios across the main road; variable room condition and equipment; noise near the pool and from other guests
Location: Grey Lynn rather than downtown; convenient for Eden Park, Western Springs and motorway access.
Rooms: Hotel rooms, studios and apartments differ substantially; studios have kitchenettes and sit across the road.
Cleanliness: Recent reviews generally praise clean, tidy rooms, despite occasional housekeeping inconsistencies.
Service: Friendly, accommodating reception staff are the most consistent strength across review sites.
Amenities: Indoor pool, pub restaurant, guest laundry and free Wi-Fi provide useful everyday comforts.
Fees and surprises: Parking is complimentary; breakfast costs extra, and guests without a qualifying credit card must provide a refundable bond.
