Useful space and location, but maintenance and service make this a cautious choice. A basic self-catering motel on Auckland’s North Shore, scored for what it is.

Takapuna Motor Lodge is a basic self-catering motel, best considered for a practical North Shore stop rather than a holiday built around hotel facilities. Spacious units, cooking facilities and free parking are its strongest selling points. Recent Expedia guests often describe clean linen, comfortable beds and a convenient location for local visits. It can work for an undemanding short stay, but we wouldn’t book it expecting consistently well-kept surroundings.

The trade-offs go beyond dated decor: recent reviews repeatedly mention broken fittings, patchy Wi-Fi and difficulty finding staff or getting check-in instructions. Cleaning feedback is mixed rather than uniformly poor. Guests across sites also report pool closures or disappointing pool maintenance; confirm access before promising children a swim. A damage deposit is required before arrival. We’d skip it for a pool-focused family break or reliable working-from-room setup.

• Best for: Short North Shore visits; Drivers wanting self-catering space

• Watch out for: Recurring maintenance and check-in problems; Unreliable Wi-Fi; Pool access needs confirmation

• Location: Convenient for North Shore Hospital, Smales Farm and motorway access; not beachfront.

• Rooms: Spacious older units with cooking facilities; guests repeatedly report worn or broken fittings.

• Cleanliness: Many recent guests praise clean beds and linen, but floors, bathrooms and grounds draw complaints.

• Service: Some helpful encounters, offset by recurring reports of unattended reception and unclear arrival instructions.

• Amenities: Free parking and self-catering are useful; Wi-Fi is weak and pool availability is inconsistent.

• Fees and surprises: Advance damage deposit required; confirm payment instructions, pool access and specific room features.
