Axel's take: 9.1/10

Choose DeBrett for character, attentive service and a genuinely useful downtown location. A small, design-led luxury boutique hotel in central Auckland, scored for what it is.

Hotel DeBrett is a small luxury boutique hotel with Art Deco character, colourful interiors and a downtown location that makes exploring Auckland straightforward. We'd choose it over a larger luxury hotel for personality and personal service. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests repeatedly praise helpful staff, spotless rooms, comfortable beds and surprisingly quiet nights. Britomart and the waterfront are within walking distance, while Vivace restaurant and the hotel's bars give you reasons to stay in.

The compromises are mostly practical: parking is offsite, Classic rooms are relatively compact, and Loft Suites involve internal stairs. Booking.com guests also flag that breakfast is à la carte rather than a buffet, with some finding the included allowance restrictive. We'd skip it if a pool, expansive facilities or a large entry-level room matter more than character and consistently strong hospitality.

• Best for: Couples who prefer boutique luxury; Downtown sightseeing without a car; Design-minded travelers

• Watch out for: Paid offsite parking; À la carte breakfast allowances; Internal stairs in Loft Suites

• Location: Central High Street setting, convenient for shops, restaurants, Britomart and the waterfront.

• Rooms: Individually decorated; Classic rooms measure 23–25 m², while Loft Suites have internal stairs.

• Cleanliness: Recent reviews consistently praise spotless rooms and well-kept bathrooms.

• Service: Friendly, attentive staff are a recurring strength across Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com.

• Amenities: Vivace restaurant, two bars and free Wi-Fi; no swimming pool.

• Fees and surprises: Offsite parking costs extra and requires reservations; check breakfast inclusions and card surcharges.
