Axel's take: 8.3/10

A strong waterfront pick, though the rooms don't always match the five-star setting. a five-star waterfront hotel on Princes Wharf, scored for what it is.

Hilton Auckland is a five-star waterfront hotel whose strongest asset is its position at the end of Princes Wharf. We'd choose it for a harbour-facing balcony, easy access to ferries and downtown restaurants, or a convenient pre-cruise stay. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, comfortable beds and breakfast, while cleanliness scores remain strong. FISH restaurant, Bellini bar and an outdoor lap pool round out the offering.

The trade-off is that some rooms feel dated rather than convincingly luxurious, a complaint that appears across review sites. Cruise ships dock alongside and can block harbour views, so check your room's outlook against ship arrivals before paying for it. Valet parking and breakfast can add to the bill. We'd skip it if fresh interiors and an uninterrupted panorama are your priorities.

• Best for: pre- and post-cruise stays; couples wanting harbour-facing balconies; downtown sightseeing without a car

• Watch out for: cruise ships can obstruct harbour views; some rooms feel dated; paid valet parking and breakfast

• Location: At the end of Princes Wharf, within walking distance of ferries, waterfront dining and downtown.

• Rooms: Comfortable rooms with balconies; outlook varies, and several recent guests flag dated interiors.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness ratings on Booking.com and Expedia outweigh isolated complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn consistent praise; occasional check-in delays appear in recent reviews.

• Amenities: Outdoor lap pool, fitness centre, FISH restaurant and Bellini bar; no hotel airport shuttle.

• Fees and surprises: Valet parking costs extra; check breakfast inclusions and whether cruise ships could obstruct your view.
