Axel's take: 7.0/10

Good central-city value, but room condition and cleanliness can be uneven. a no-frills 3-star hotel in central Auckland, scored for what it is.

Gamma is a no-frills 3-star in central Auckland, best treated as a practical budget base rather than a polished hotel. Its strongest draw is the walkable location near Britomart, the waterfront and shops. Booking.com guests rate location and value particularly well, while recent Expedia reviews often praise helpful staff and clean rooms. Microwaves, fridges and a shared kitchen make simple meals easier.

The catch is consistency. Several 2026 Tripadvisor guests report bathroom mould and poor housekeeping, and a recent Expedia review echoes the mould complaint, despite that site's generally positive cleanliness ratings. Noise and tired interiors also recur across reviews. The uphill approach and lack of a lift make luggage awkward. We'd consider it for a short, budget-minded city stay, but skip it if you're sensitive to damp, noise or stairs.

• Best for: Budget-minded city explorers; Short stays near Britomart; Travelers wanting basic self-catering

• Watch out for: Uneven bathroom cleanliness and mould reports; Noise and tired interiors; Uphill approach and no lift

• Location: Walkable to Britomart, shops and the waterfront, but the return involves a hill.

• Rooms: Basic rooms with useful appliances; condition and noise levels vary.

• Cleanliness: Mostly positive booking-site ratings, tempered by repeated recent mould and housekeeping complaints.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, though some guests describe poor complaint handling.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, shared kitchen, laundry and breakfast available; parking is limited.

• Fees and surprises: Paid parking, a damage deposit and card surcharge are listed; arrange arrivals after 9 p.m. ahead.
