Axel's take: 8.6/10

A strong beachside base, with friendly service and some older-room compromises. A garden-set 4-star motel beside Takapuna Beach, scored for what it is.

Emerald Inn is a garden-set 4-star motel rather than a full-service hotel, and it's a strong pick for a relaxed Takapuna stay. The beach, cafés and restaurants are a short walk away, while kitchenettes, free parking and free guest laundry make longer visits practical. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff; the leafy grounds and outdoor pool add character.

The compromise is consistency of finish: some guests find their rooms attractively decorated, while others describe dated fittings and maintenance niggles. Air-conditioning is also absent in some rooms, so confirm your room's cooling before a summer stay. We'd choose it for beach access and an easygoing apartment-style setup, but skip it if you expect uniformly modern interiors or round-the-clock hotel service.

• Best for: Couples wanting beach and café access; Families who prefer self-catering; Longer North Shore stays

• Watch out for: Some rooms lack air-conditioning; Uneven room condition; Limited reception hours

• Location: Steps from Takapuna Beach, with restaurants, shops and Bruce Mason Centre within walking distance.

• Rooms: Studios and larger self-contained options; comfortable beds earn praise, but some fittings show age.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest reviews, including strong Booking.com and Expedia cleanliness scores.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff draw repeated praise; arrange arrival ahead because reception hours are limited.

• Amenities: Outdoor pool, gardens, free parking, Wi-Fi and guest laundry; cooking facilities vary by room type.

• Fees and surprises: Parking and guest laundry are free; Expedia lists possible housekeeping and cot charges, so confirm inclusions.
