Axel's take: 8.7/10

A dependable central base with spacious rooms, helpful staff and some dated bathrooms. a full-service 4-star business hotel in central Auckland, scored for what it is.

Crowne Plaza Auckland is a full-service 4-star business hotel that gets the important things right: generous rooms, comfortable beds and a genuinely useful central location near Sky Tower and Queen Street. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise cleanliness and helpful staff, while recent Tripadvisor reviews reinforce the appeal for families. We'd pick it for a straightforward, comfortable city stay rather than boutique character. The buffet breakfast is another recurring strength.

The refresh isn't uniform: the lobby, restaurant and premium rooms have been refurbished, but guests still describe some bedrooms and bathrooms as dated. Confirm a refurbished room if that matters to you. Parking costs extra, and there's a gym and sauna but no pool. We'd skip it if you want uniformly modern interiors or resort-style facilities; for sightseeing, business trips and family city breaks, it's a strong choice.

• Best for: first-time Auckland visitors; business and conference travelers; families wanting spacious rooms

• Watch out for: uneven room refurbishment; parking costs extra; no swimming pool

• Location: Central CBD position near Sky Tower, Queen Street, restaurants and theaters.

• Rooms: Spacious and comfortable; refurbished premium rooms coexist with older interiors and bathrooms.

• Cleanliness: Strong ratings across Booking.com and Expedia, backed by recent guest praise.

• Service: Friendly, helpful reception and concierge teams are a consistent strength.

• Amenities: Restaurant, well-liked breakfast, 24-hour gym, sauna and guest laundry; no pool.

• Fees and surprises: Paid adjacent Atrium parking; breakfast and executive-lounge access depend on your booking.
