Axel's take: 7.0/10

A practical concert-night base, but tired rooms keep expectations firmly mid-range. An aging, officially 4-star city hotel near Spark Arena, scored for what it is.

Copthorne Auckland City is an aging mid-range hotel, officially rated four stars, whose strongest selling point is convenience rather than polish. We'd consider it for a Spark Arena concert or a University of Auckland visit: both are a short walk away. Recent Expedia and Tripadvisor guests repeatedly praise helpful staff and comfortable beds, and cleanliness generally earns better feedback than the building's condition. It's a sensible short-stay option if you value location over modern interiors.

The recurring drawback is wear: dated furniture and bathrooms needing refurbishment still appear in October 2026 reviews. Breakfast and restaurant feedback is mixed, while some guests mention noise carrying between rooms. Parking costs extra and spaces are limited; the hilly surroundings also deserve consideration. We'd skip it for a special occasion, a reliably quiet retreat or a polished four-star experience.

• Best for: Spark Arena concertgoers; University visitors; Value-minded short stays

• Watch out for: Dated rooms and worn bathrooms; Limited paid parking; Variable sound insulation

• Location: Walkable to Spark Arena and the university; expect hills around this eastern CBD location.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds are a recurring plus, but furniture and bathroom maintenance need attention.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive recent feedback, with occasional housekeeping and bathroom complaints.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff are a consistent strength, though check-in information can be uneven.

• Amenities: Free Wi-Fi, air conditioning and a restaurant/bar; dining feedback is mixed.

• Fees and surprises: Parking is charged and subject to availability; breakfast may cost extra, and checkout is 10am.
