#8 of 8 hotels in Newmarket by Axel's take. Newmarket is #5 of 10 places to stay in Auckland. The best hotels in Newmarket, ranked · Where to stay in Auckland

Axel's take: 5.5/10

Convenient location and friendly staff cannot make up for unreliable upkeep. a basic 3-star motel near Newmarket, scored for what it is.

Ascot Epsom is a basic 3-star motel near Newmarket, with free parking, microwaves and fridges, plus kitchens in family units. Its strongest case is convenience: shops, eateries and Remuera station are nearby, and guests frequently praise the friendly reception staff. Some recent Expedia guests also describe clean rooms and comfortable stays, so it is not uniformly disappointing.

But the maintenance problems go beyond dated decor. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia reviews describe worn fittings, malfunctioning televisions, inadequate bedding and inconsistent cleaning; several 2026 reports mention mould or neglected bathrooms. Road noise is another consideration, and we would not book for the advertised spa units without confirming their condition. It might suit an undemanding overnight stop, but we'd skip it for a longer stay or whenever dependable cleanliness and comfort matter most.

  • Best for: undemanding overnight stops; drivers needing a Newmarket-area base

  • Watch out for: recurring maintenance and cleaning complaints; road noise; spa-unit condition needs confirmation

  • Location: Handy for Newmarket shops and eateries, with Remuera station nearby; Great South Road can be noisy.

  • Rooms: Useful cooking facilities, but recent guests report worn fittings, faulty TVs and insufficient bedding.

  • Cleanliness: Mixed: some guests praise spotless linen, while others report mould, smells and poorly cleaned rooms.

  • Service: Friendly reception staff are a recurring positive, even in otherwise critical reviews.

  • Amenities: Free parking and Wi-Fi, coin-operated laundry and family kitchens; the hotel confirms no restaurant or swimming pool.

  • Fees and surprises: A refundable damage deposit is listed; arrange late arrival ahead and verify any spa facilities before booking.
