Axel's take: 9.1/10

A characterful Athens retreat where personal service matters more than big-hotel facilities. An intimate, six-suite boutique guesthouse in historic Kolonaki, scored for what it is.

Shila is a six-suite boutique guesthouse in a 1920s residence, not a conventional full-service four-star. It’s a strong pick for travelers who want antique furnishings, distinctive interiors and personal attention in walkable Kolonaki. Recent Tripadvisor and Expedia guests consistently praise the welcoming staff, comfortable beds, cleanliness and peaceful setting. Included Greek breakfast, served in your suite or on the roof terrace, adds to the intimate, residential feel.

The trade-off is practicality rather than hospitality. Suites differ considerably, and some bathrooms are deliberately low-lit, so choose the room rather than just the hotel. The hotel lists daily housekeeping as available on request and reception has limited hours; arrange late arrivals ahead. We’d skip it if you want round-the-clock hotel service or extensive leisure facilities, but for a quiet, design-led city stay, Shila delivers unusually well.

• Best for: Couples seeking an intimate city stay; Design and antique lovers; Travelers who prefer personal service

• Watch out for: Room layouts and lighting vary; Daily housekeeping must be requested; Limited reception hours

• Location: A quiet Kolonaki setting within walking distance of central shopping, restaurants and Syntagma Square.

• Rooms: Six individually styled suites; some have private gardens, while larger suites offer separate lounging space.

• Cleanliness: Strong cleanliness feedback across Tripadvisor, Expedia and Booking.com.

• Service: Warm, attentive staff are a recurring highlight; reception is listed as operating from 07:30 to 23:30.

• Amenities: Included Greek breakfast, roof terrace, library lounge and Wi-Fi; more guesthouse than leisure hotel.

• Fees and surprises: The hotel lists a separate climate-resilience fee; transfers, minibar items and other extras cost more.
