#3 of 9 hotels in Koukaki & Makrygianni by Axel's take. Koukaki & Makrygianni is #3 of 9 places to stay in Athens. The best hotels in Koukaki & Makrygianni, ranked · Where to stay in Athens
Axel's take: 8.8/10
A strong sightseeing base, with rooftop views that outshine the rooms. a central 4-star sightseeing hotel with a standout rooftop, scored for what it is.
Athens Gate is a central 4-star that makes particular sense for a first Athens visit: the Acropolis Museum, Plaka and major ancient sights are within easy walking reach. Its rooftop restaurant and breakfast terrace are the main draw, with Acropolis views that guests consistently praise. Expedia and Tripadvisor reviews also repeatedly highlight helpful staff, comfortable beds and clean rooms. We'd choose it for a sightseeing-focused city break rather than a luxury retreat.
The compromises are compact, sometimes tired rooms, tiny lifts and traffic noise, particularly on the Temple of Zeus side. Budget rooms have neither views nor balconies, and there is no pool or gym. Management says room and public-area renovations begin in November 2026; confirm the work schedule before booking. Light sleepers and travelers wanting spacious, polished rooms should look elsewhere.
-

-
