Axel's take: 7.9/10

Good-value comfort if you’re happy taking the tram into central Amsterdam. a practical 4-star hotel in residential Amsterdam West, scored for what it is.

XO Hotels Blue Tower is a practical 4-star in Amsterdam West, better treated as a comfortable sightseeing base than a full-service luxury hotel. We'd pick it for the room space and value: doubles measure 20–22 square metres, with larger options for families and friends. Booking.com and Expedia guests repeatedly praise comfortable beds, clean rooms and helpful staff. Shops and inexpensive places to eat nearby make the residential setting useful.

The main compromise is location: allow roughly 20–25 minutes by public transport to central Amsterdam, rather than expecting canal-side sightseeing outside the door. Some guests report dust missed by housekeeping or noise from other rooms, although the overall cleanliness picture is positive. Breakfast gets mixed reactions, and the hotel is cashless and serves no alcohol. We'd skip it for a pampering stay or a short trip built around walking everywhere.

• Best for: value-minded city explorers; families and friends sharing larger rooms; travelers comfortable using public transport

• Watch out for: 20–25-minute transit journey to the centre; occasional housekeeping misses and room noise; cashless; no alcohol served

• Location: Residential Bos en Lommer, with shops, eateries and tram and bus stops close by.

• Rooms: Comfortable, reasonably spacious rooms with air-conditioning, fridges and coffee facilities; sound insulation gets some criticism.

• Cleanliness: Generally well rated, but several guests describe missed dust or debris under beds.

• Service: Helpful reception staff earn frequent praise; check-in and checkout use self-service terminals.

• Amenities: Buffet breakfast, free Wi-Fi and 24-hour reception; more practical base than destination hotel.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra depending on the booking; early check-in carries a supplement and is not guaranteed.
