Axel's take: 7.5/10

Go for the rooftop and location, not flawless five-star polish. a nightlife-focused 5-star in two historic buildings beside Dam Square, scored for what it is.

W Amsterdam is a design-led 5-star split between a former bank and communications building beside Dam Square. It’s a good pick for travelers who want rooftop drinks, a heated outdoor pool and a substantial spa alongside central sightseeing. Expedia and Booking.com guests repeatedly praise the location, comfortable beds and welcoming staff; the social spaces are a bigger draw than dependable luxury polish.

The trade-off is inconsistency. Recent reviews across sites describe worn finishes, housekeeping misses and uneven service alongside plenty of excellent stays. Some guests also report music reaching rooms, and the two-building layout means amenities aren’t all under one roof. Spa access requires advance booking and is time-limited, so don’t assume unrestricted use. We’d choose it for a lively couples’ city break, but skip it for quiet, meticulous luxury.

• Best for: couples seeking a lively city break; rooftop-bar and spa enthusiasts; sightseeing on foot

• Watch out for: music can reach some rooms; uneven upkeep and housekeeping; spa reservations and time limits

• Location: Excellent walking base beside Dam Square, close to canals and Nine Streets shopping.

• Rooms: Distinctive layouts and comfortable beds; some recent guests flag worn finishes and noise.

• Cleanliness: Generally positive ratings, but repeated recent housekeeping and corridor-cleanliness complaints matter at this level.

• Service: Many guests praise individual staff; follow-through and problem handling are less consistent.

• Amenities: Rooftop pool and lounge, indoor spa pool, gym and restaurants are spread across two buildings.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast, valet parking and pets carry extra charges; reserve spa access and confirm the current session limit.
