Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong canalside base with personality, but choose your room carefully. a design-led 4-star in five historic canal houses, scored for what it is.

The Hoxton is a design-led 4-star spread across five historic canal houses on the Herengracht. It’s a strong pick for exploring central Amsterdam on foot, with more personality than a conventional city hotel. Recent Expedia guests repeatedly praise the helpful staff, clean rooms and comfortable beds; Booking.com feedback is more mixed about service and details. The sociable lobby and Lotti’s are part of the appeal, and October 2026 reporting describes a completed refresh of the public spaces and five Signature rooms.

The catch is room selection: smaller categories can feel tight, and historic layouts sometimes involve internal steps. Don’t assume air conditioning is universal—the official FAQ stops short of guaranteeing it, and a recent guest reported a room without it. We’d choose this for a characterful city break, but look elsewhere if generous space, an on-site gym or predictable step-free access matters most.

• Best for: couples on a city break; design-minded travelers; exploring central Amsterdam on foot

• Watch out for: compact rooms and variable layouts; confirm room-specific air conditioning; internal steps in some rooms

• Location: Excellent Herengracht setting in the Nine Streets area, with central sights within walking reach.

• Rooms: Characterful interiors; check dimensions, canal-view category, cooling and any internal steps before booking.

• Cleanliness: Recent Expedia feedback is strongly positive; isolated complaints elsewhere do not establish a widespread problem.

• Service: Helpful staff earn frequent praise, although Booking.com and Tripadvisor feedback includes uneven follow-through.

• Amenities: Lotti’s restaurant and bar, free Wi-Fi and loan bikes; no on-site gym or hotel parking.

• Fees and surprises: City tax and a nightly deposit apply; breakfast can cost extra. October reporting describes the public-space renovation as completed.
