Axel's take: 8.8/10

A strong canal-belt luxury pick, provided you choose your room carefully. a five-star hotel spread across 25 historic canal houses, scored for what it is.

Pulitzer Amsterdam is a five-star hotel woven through 25 historic canal houses, and we'd choose it for character rather than grand-hotel uniformity. Its Nine Streets setting makes an excellent walking base. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the helpful staff, comfortable beds and cleanliness; recent Trip.com reviews reinforce the service praise. Gardens, Jansz. restaurant and Pulitzer's Bar give it appeal beyond the bedrooms.

The main compromise is the building itself: smaller rooms, winding corridors and occasional staircases recur in guest accounts. Confirm your room's size and access, especially if mobility matters; the hotel has dedicated accessible rooms. Nearby Oranje Loper construction is another practical drawback, with no trams along Raadhuisstraat–Rozengracht through February 2027. We'd skip it if spacious, predictable rooms matter more than historic atmosphere.

• Best for: couples who like historic design; first-time visitors exploring on foot; luxury travelers seeking local character

• Watch out for: small rooms and complicated access in some categories; nearby construction and tram diversions; canal views require the right room category

• Location: Excellent Nine Streets canal-belt base; nearby Westermarkt works complicate transport.

• Rooms: Comfortable and individually arranged; confirm size, stairs, view and bathtub before booking.

• Cleanliness: Strong overall cleanliness ratings, supported by recent guest praise.

• Service: Helpful staff and concierge service are consistent strengths across booking sites.

• Amenities: Gardens, Jansz., cocktail bar, gym, beauty treatments and bookable hotel boat trips.

• Fees and surprises: Budget for city tax, paid valet parking and breakfast unless included; canal views are not standard.
