Axel's take: 8.5/10

A strong sightseeing base, with helpful staff and more practicality than personality. a straightforward 4-star beside the Singel canal, scored for what it is.

NH City Centre Amsterdam is a straightforward 4-star beside the Singel canal, and it’s a strong pick for exploring Amsterdam on foot. The Nine Streets, restaurants and tram connections are close by. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the location, helpful staff and cleanliness; recent reviews also regularly single out comfortable beds and the varied breakfast. We'd choose it for an easy city break rather than a hotel-centered stay.

The main compromise is the room you book: sizes and outlooks vary, some entry-level rooms are compact, and the contemporary decor is functional rather than distinctive. Choose an explicitly labeled canal-view room if that matters. There’s a gym and light dining at The Patio, but this isn’t a full-service luxury retreat. Breakfast and garage parking can cost extra. Skip it if generous space or boutique character tops your list.

• Best for: first-time Amsterdam visitors; couples on sightseeing breaks; families wanting central accommodation

• Watch out for: compact entry-level rooms; room views and layouts vary; breakfast and parking may cost extra

• Location: Excellent walking base beside the Singel, close to the Nine Streets and Spui trams.

• Rooms: Comfortable, contemporary and fairly plain; check the exact room category and outlook.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com, Expedia and recent Trip.com reviews.

• Service: Friendly, helpful staff earn repeated praise across several review sites.

• Amenities: Gym, free Wi-Fi, breakfast buffet and The Patio for drinks and light meals.

• Fees and surprises: Check breakfast inclusion; garage parking and pets carry additional charges.
