Axel's take: 7.8/10

A practical budget base with excellent transport links, but a busy hostel atmosphere. A budget hotel-hostel hybrid beside Amsterdam Sloterdijk station, scored for what it is.

MEININGER Amsterdam City West is a budget hotel-hostel hybrid, with private rooms, family bunk rooms and shared dorms beside Sloterdijk station. It's a strong pick for groups and budget-minded families happy to take a short train ride into central Amsterdam. Booking.com and Google guests consistently praise the transport links and helpful reception staff. The guest kitchen, laundry and games area add useful flexibility rather than hotel polish.

The trade-off is scale: school groups and busy communal spaces can make it feel hectic, and corridor noise crops up in reviews. Rooms generally deliver the basics, but recent guests describe some dated interiors and uneven housekeeping; private-room cleaning is on request. Breakfast and luggage storage cost extra. We'd skip it for a romantic break, reliable quiet or a canal-side neighborhood outside the door.

  • Best for: Budget-minded families; Groups of friends; Travelers prioritizing train connections

  • Watch out for: Busy school-group atmosphere and corridor noise; Private-room cleaning must be requested; Extra charges for breakfast and luggage storage

  • Location: Beside Sloterdijk's transport hub; convenient for central Amsterdam by train, not a canal-district setting.

  • Rooms: Simple private rooms and dorms with en-suite bathrooms; some recent guests find interiors dated.

  • Cleanliness: Generally positive overall, with recurring exceptions involving housekeeping and the shared kitchen.

  • Service: Reception staff attract frequent praise, though room-readiness and follow-through can be uneven.

  • Amenities: Guest kitchen, paid laundry, bar, games area, free Wi-Fi and 24-hour reception.

  • Fees and surprises: Cashless property; city tax is listed separately, with charges for breakfast, parking and luggage storage.
