Axel's take: 9.1/10

A standout canal-house stay, provided character matters more than easy access. A small, design-led boutique hotel in historic canal houses, scored for what it is.

The Craftsmen is a small boutique hotel on the Singel, with individually designed rooms celebrating traditional trades. It's a strong pick for travelers who want Amsterdam character without sacrificing attentive service. Booking.com and Expedia guests consistently praise the staff, cleanliness and breakfast; recent reviews also highlight comfortable beds and thoughtful personal touches. We'd choose it for a couples' city break rather than a full-service hotel experience.

The main compromise is the building itself. A small lift helps, but narrow stairs, internal bathroom steps and low ceilings make room selection important, especially for anyone with limited mobility. Sizes and outlooks vary, so book the specific room, not just the photographs you like. We'd skip it if step-free access or predictable, spacious layouts are essential.

• Best for: Couples on a city break; Travelers who appreciate inventive design; Exploring central Amsterdam on foot

• Watch out for: Narrow stairs and steps inside some rooms; Low ceilings and variable room sizes; Confirm room-specific cooling for summer stays

• Location: Central Singel canal setting, convenient for walking to Dam Square and exploring the historic center.

• Rooms: Individually themed rooms with comfortable beds; dimensions, ceiling heights and canal views vary substantially.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across Booking.com and Expedia, with excellent cleanliness ratings.

• Service: Warm, helpful staff and thoughtful personal attention are the clearest recurring strengths.

• Amenities: Well-reviewed breakfast, free Wi-Fi and a small lift; breakfast can also be served in the room.

• Fees and surprises: A refundable damage deposit and city tax apply; no onsite parking, and late arrivals need coordination.
