Axel's take: 8.5/10

Industrial character and neighborhood appeal make this a strong pick—choose your room carefully. A design-led 4-star in a converted tram depot in Amsterdam’s Oud-West, scored for what it is.

Hotel De Hallen is a design-led 4-star in a former tram depot, and a strong pick if you prefer neighborhood restaurants to the busiest tourist streets. Its industrial architecture and art-filled communal spaces give it character without sacrificing comfort. Recent Expedia and Trip.com guests repeatedly praise clean rooms, comfortable beds and helpful staff. Foodhallen next door and nearby trams make Oud-West a practical, food-focused base.

The biggest caveat is daylight: the hotel explicitly says Indoor Rooms face the atrium and have no direct daylight. Some guests also flag windows that do not open, so confirm the room setup rather than assuming an upgrade solves that. The historic center requires a walk or tram ride. We'd skip it if outdoor views and sightseeing on your doorstep matter more than design and neighborhood atmosphere.

• Best for: Design-minded couples; Food-focused city breaks; Travelers happy using trams

• Watch out for: Indoor Rooms have no direct daylight; Some room windows do not open; Outside the historic tourist core

• Location: Beside Foodhallen in Oud-West, with trams nearby rather than central sights immediately outside.

• Rooms: Comfortable beds and distinctive design; check daylight and window arrangements before booking.

• Cleanliness: A consistent strength across recent guest feedback and major booking-site ratings.

• Service: Recent guests generally describe friendly, helpful staff.

• Amenities: Restaurant/bar, breakfast, terrace and free Wi-Fi; breakfast receives frequent praise.

• Fees and surprises: Cashless hotel; city tax applies, and breakfast costs extra unless included in your booking.
