Axel's take: 8.3/10

A characterful parkside stay, provided you choose your room carefully. a historic 4-star boutique hotel in Oosterpark, scored for what it is.

Hotel Arena is a historic 4-star boutique hotel in Oosterpark, and a strong pick if you prefer greenery and architectural character to a canal-belt address. Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com guests broadly agree on the appeal: helpful staff, generally clean rooms and a lovely park setting. The PARK restaurant and terrace give you a good reason to spend time at the hotel, rather than simply sleep here.

The main compromise is room practicality. Some layouts feel compact, and mezzanine bedrooms involve steep, narrow stairs; request a single-level room if mobility matters. Recent guests also mention weak air conditioning. An Expedia guest reported renovations and restricted lift service in May 2026; completion could not be confirmed, so check before booking. We'd skip it if you want everything on your doorstep or predictable, spacious rooms.

• Best for: couples who like historic boutique hotels; travelers preferring a parkside base; sightseers happy using trams or bikes

• Watch out for: steep stairs in mezzanine rooms; compact layouts and some air-conditioning complaints; confirm renovation and lift status

• Location: In Oosterpark, with tram stops nearby; Dam Square is roughly two kilometers away.

• Rooms: Distinctive layouts, but some feel small; confirm whether your bedroom requires internal stairs.

• Cleanliness: Generally well rated across Booking.com, Expedia and Trip.com, without a dominant recent cleanliness concern.

• Service: Helpful, friendly staff are a consistent strength in recent guest feedback.

• Amenities: PARK restaurant and terrace, bike rental, free Wi-Fi and paid underground parking.

• Fees and surprises: Breakfast may cost extra; parking is charged, and Booking.com lists a refundable damage deposit.
